Children's sizes
Choosing the right size for children's clothing is a challenge every parent faces. Manufacturers use different labels, and children grow at a rapid pace. Therefore, it's worth knowing some basic rules that will make shopping easier and help avoid poor choices.
Why does size matter?
Clothes that are too tight restrict a child's movement and cause discomfort, while those that are too loose can be uncomfortable or even dangerous – for example, long pants can get tangled underfoot. Choosing the right size isn't just a matter of aesthetics, but also of comfort and safety for the child.
How to read children's sizes?
In Poland, height markings are most often used in centimeters – e.g. 74, 80, 86, 92, 98, etc. This means that size 92 is intended for a child who is approximately 92 cm tall.
Some brands also specify ages—e.g., 6-12 months, 2-3 years—but these labels are less precise. Children of the same age can differ in height by as much as several centimeters.
What is worth measuring?
It's best to measure your child before purchasing. The most important measurements are:
-
height – from the feet to the top of the head (preferably barefoot, against a wall),
-
chest and hip circumference – useful when choosing blouses and trousers,
-
leg length – from crotch to ankle,
-
sleeve length – from shoulder to wrist.
If you're buying online, always check the size chart provided by the specific brand – sizes can vary by up to one full size depending on the manufacturer.
Is it worth buying a larger size?
This is a common question from parents. Buying clothes that are "oversized" makes sense for everyday items like sweatshirts and pants, but jackets, shoes, and baby onesies, for example, should fit well. Clothes that are too big can be uncomfortable and unsightly.
Summary
Choosing the right size for children's clothing doesn't have to be difficult if you know what to look for. Height is the best reference point, and measuring your child every few months will help you avoid making inappropriate purchases. It's always worth using size charts and choosing clothes that are not only attractive but, above all, comfortable.
