The History of LEGO – How Was One of the World’s Most Popular Toys Created?

Today, LEGO bricks are one of the most recognizable toys in the world, loved by children and adults alike. The history of LEGO begins in a small carpentry workshop in Denmark and leads to the creation of a global toy empire. Here's how LEGO was created, how it developed and what made it win the hearts of millions of people around the world.

1. LEGO Beginnings – A Humble Carpentry Workshop

The LEGO story begins in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, where Ole Kirk Christiansen, a passionate carpenter, founded his small carpentry workshop. Christiansen initially specialized in the production of wooden furniture, doors and windows, but difficult economic times forced him to look for other sources of income.

  • Shift to Toy Production : In 1932, Christiansen decided to focus on producing wooden toys, such as wheeled ducks and yo-yos. These toys became the seed of LEGO's future success.
  • The name "LEGO" : In 1934, Christiansen came up with the name "LEGO", which comes from the Danish phrase "leg godt", meaning "play well". This was to symbolize the company's philosophy - creating toys that bring joy to children and stimulate their imagination.

2. The First Plastic Blocks and Innovations

After the war, LEGO began experimenting with plastics, which had a key impact on the company's further development. In 1947, LEGO was one of the first companies in Denmark to buy a plastic molding machine. This allowed the production of the first plastic toys, which turned out to be a revolutionary step.

  • Introduction of the First LEGO Bricks : In 1949, the first plastic bricks, called "Automatic Binding Bricks", appeared. These were rectangular bricks with studs that could be connected, but their construction was not yet perfect - they fell apart easily.
  • LEGO Brick Improvement : In 1958, the company developed a new, stable system for connecting bricks using a tube in the middle. This technology made the bricks durable and allowed for stable construction. Interestingly, the same connection system is still used today!

3. Growth in Popularity and Expansion into International Markets

Thanks to its innovations and quality, LEGO quickly gained popularity in Denmark and soon in other European countries. In the 1960s, the company began to expand into foreign markets, which contributed to its dynamic growth.

  • LEGO System in Toys : In 1961, LEGO introduced the concept of the "LEGO System", i.e. sets of bricks that could be connected together in a variety of ways, which gave children the opportunity to build different structures with the same bricks.
  • Introduction to American Markets : In 1962, LEGO entered into an agreement with Samsonite, a company known for manufacturing suitcases, which allowed LEGO bricks to be distributed in the United States and Canada. This significantly increased the brand's recognition and popularity of the bricks around the world.

4. The First LEGO Set and LEGOland

In the 1960s and 1970s, LEGO expanded its range of themed sets, allowing children to build not only basic structures but also cars, houses, trains and more. In 1968, the company also opened the first LEGOland amusement park in Billund, another step in strengthening the brand.

  • LEGOland Park : The first LEGOland Park in Billund quickly became a tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors a year. The park featured exhibitions built from LEGO bricks, which was inspiring for both children and adults.
  • The Rise of Themed Sets : In the 1970s, LEGO sets were introduced that had specific themes, such as LEGO Town, LEGO Space, and LEGO Castle. This further increased the popularity of the bricks, as children could build entire worlds based on their interests.

5. LEGO Crisis and Rebirth

In the 1990s and early 2000s, LEGO faced serious financial difficulties. Faced with growing competition and changing trends in the toy market, the company had trouble adapting to new requirements. However, thanks to strategic changes, innovations and new LEGO products, it managed to overcome the crisis.

  • LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Harry Potter launched : In 1999, LEGO licensed the production of bricks based on popular films such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. This attracted new fans to the brand and significantly improved the company's financial results.
  • LEGO Mindstorms : In 1998, LEGO Mindstorms was introduced – a series of building blocks with robotic elements that allowed children to build interactive robots. This combination of fun with learning technology and programming proved to be a hit on the educational and toy market.

6. Global Success and Transformation into a Pop Culture Icon

With licensed products such as LEGO Star Wars, Marvel, DC Comics and many others, LEGO has not only rebuilt its position, but also become a brand recognized all over the world. Today, LEGO is not only toys, but also films, computer games, series and books.

  • The LEGO Movie : In 2014, The LEGO Movie was released, the first theatrical film based on LEGO bricks. The film was a huge success and attracted a huge number of new fans.
  • Expansion into Education and Technology : Today, LEGO also develops educational programs, offering sets such as LEGO Education, which are used in schools to teach science and creative thinking.

7. Why Has LEGO Become an Iconic Brand?

LEGO has become an icon thanks to its innovation, durability, flexibility and exceptional product quality. With its unlimited possibilities for play and building, LEGO has won the hearts of fans around the world and has become a symbol of creativity.

  • Multi-generational Product : LEGO bricks are loved by children and adults of all ages, making them a unique toy that connects generations.
  • Innovation and Adaptation to Trends : LEGO is constantly developing and adapting to changing trends, which makes the brand always up to date and attractive to new generations.

Summary

The LEGO story is an inspiring tale of innovation, perseverance and creativity. From a humble carpentry workshop to a global empire, LEGO has come a long way to become one of the most popular and recognizable brands in the world. Today, LEGO is a symbol of creativity, passion and limitless possibilities for creation, and it all started with a simple idea - "have fun".
